Elections in Nicaragua and YATAMA
Dear Sir or Madam:
My name is Melesio Peter Espinoza, I am a Catholic
Priest and an Anthropologist of Miskito origin.
I am a candidate to receive a PhD in Anthropology from
La Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. I am currently writing my
thesis about Miskito inmigrants living in Port Arthur, Texas.
The purpose of my e-mail is to introduce you to what is
occurring in the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua. The atlantic coast of
Nicaragua is inhabited by multicultural groups of people: Miskito, Sumu,
Mayagna, Rama, Creole, Garifunu, and Mestizo. Historically the Atlantic
coast region has been marginated for past and present governments. In the
mid 60's the ethnic groups of the Atlantic region started to organize, and
after a struggle of approximately more than 30 years, in 1987, the atlantic
coast of Nicaragua was recognized, as an autonomous region. The region was
divided in two parts: North Atlantic Coast Autonomous Region (RAAN), and the
South Atlantic Coast Autonomous Region (RAAS).
This automous region celebrates democratic elections
every four years with the purpose of electing governors and council. Since
the year 2000, power in Nicaragua has been shared by two political parties:
El Frente Sandinista de Liberacion Nacional (FSLN), and Partido Liberal
Constitucional (PLC). These two parties decide the future of Nicaragua, this
alliance is recognized in Nicaragua as Pact within Daniel Ortega and Arnoldo
Aleman.
On March 5th there were regional elections in the
Atlantic coast of Nicaragua, to elect governor and council. The result of
the election left the candidates from FSLN and PLC as winners. YATAMA the
ethnic party of the atlantic coast, is unhappy about this result. They
consider that the two parties: FSLN and PLC manipulated the election.
Several days ago, YATAMA decided to protest the results of the election.
I want to invite you to report on this situation, since,
this situation is an example of the continuos abuses to which the indigenous
people of Latin America are subjected to. I consider the NY Times as a
newspaper that enjoys wide international respect, and can help the world
know about the present reality that the ethnic groups of the atlantic coast
of Nicaragua are living.
Sincerely,
Melesio Peter Espinoza
